Compulsory Basic Training

At Direct Rider Training, we provide DVSA-approved Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) in Swindon to get you safely on the road with your motorcycle or scooter.

What is CBT?

CBT is the first step for anyone who wants to ride a motorcycle or moped on UK roads. It’s not a test — it’s a one-day training course that ensures you can ride safely and confidently. Once completed, you’ll receive a CBT certificate (DL196), which allows you to ride:

Mopeds up to 50cc (from age 16)

Motorcycles up to 125cc (from age 17)

With L-plates, no passengers, and no motorways

What’s included?
Professional DVSA-approved instruction
Motorcycle or scooter hire (125cc)
Helmet, gloves, and jacket if required
Fuel and insurance for the day
Your CBT certificate (DL196) on successful completion
What do you need to bring?
Your UK driving licence (photocard) - (Contact us for advice regarding non GB licences)
Sturdy trousers and boots that cover the ankle
Glasses or contact lenses (if you need them for riding)
Lunch/snacks & drinks (it’s a full day)
How long does it take?
Most CBT courses are completed in one day. However, the DVSA requires us to sign you off only when you demonstrate safe riding. Some riders may need additional training (at extra cost).
Next steps after CBT
At 17+, you can move on to an A1, 19+ allows you to move up to A2 or 24+ (Direct Access)/21+ (Progressive access) A licence if you want to ride bigger bikes.
We’ll guide you through whichever path is right for your riding goals.
What Does It Cost?
